Search engines work either by crawling or indexing billions of pages. Millions of users want to fetch a site related to a query. All this is done by search engines. They crawl billions of pages and navigate the internet on the web and follow links. As you know there are two types of links: 
do-follow and no-follow. Do-follow is a clickable hyperlink no-follow is a clickable link but does not give any effect on google. Also, it is known as bots or crawlers they crawl our sites and add to index the search engines

Search engines are based on databases and find content. They are made up, of two parts.

Search Index- It is a library that consists of web pages

Search algorithms- These are computer-based complex queries that search for a particular query.

Crawling- This is a process under which the search engines crawl and finds each web page according to user queries on its sites.
Indexing- It is a process of creating and indexing web pages after crawling. Essentially, it identifies and describes the pages by assigning particular keywords to them.
Processing- After crawling and indexing we do processing under which we process the data and provide relevancy accordingly.
Ranking- It is a process under which relevancy is calculated and the site is ranked accordingly.
